The first Koenig & Bauer (KBA) Rapida 75 half-format press with LED-UV drying in Canada has been installed at Toronto-based printer and retail specialist Dana Industries. Established 25 years ago, Dana Industries has grown from its headquarters in Toronto and added facilities in Surrey, BC, the U.S., Mexico and Singapore. Its portfolio includes custom shelf talkers, retail store fixtures and displays, large-format printing and product packaging. “We’re seeing brands requesting more pop, more vibrant colours, messaging and customization,” said John Ricci, Dana President. “Our mandate is to reach shoppers with effective, engaging campaigns similar to mini-billboards.” Dana needed a larger press than its current KBA Genius 52 14” x 20.” So a KBA Rapida 75 PRO with LED-UV drying was commissioned at Dana’s 35,000-sq.-ft. facility in Toronto. This was the first half-format press using this type of drying technology installed in Canada. Dana also purpose-built a 4,000-sq.-ft., humidity-controlled pressroom for the new press. The Rapida 75 PRO has now expanded capabilities for both Dana’s customers and its own production processes.
“We see a lot of value in the Rapida 75 PRO,” Ricci added. “We now have a two and a half times larger sheet size compared to the Genius. Its standard print format has grown to 23” x 29.” We’ll now be able to produce 80% of our work in-house compared to 20% before. This is a huge step up for us.” The new press handles shorter runs, and more runs with fewer plate changes. Its One-Button-Job-Change feature can reduce make-ready times by up to 50%. Job and press settings can be loaded at its ErgoTronic Console during production. Additional colour and “more pop” are accommodated via the same ColorTronic ink ducts as those found in medium and large-format Rapidas. Just like those, the ink keys are 1.18” and there are now 25 keys.
“Let’s talk about the advantages of the LED-UV curing process,” Ricci added. “Not only does it bring tangible economic benefits – such as reduced energy consumption and significant material savings – but we’re able to print our shelf signage using plastic substrates and it will run cooler. And, due to the lower temperatures, the substrate won’t crack, peel or split. In the past, if we had to run the job through a press in two or three passes, the substrate would be more brittle. With the Rapida 75 PRO, we won’t face that challenge any more.”
