Sheridan launches first-ever BA program that combines writing and publishing

When Sheridan College’s four-year Honours Bachelor of Creative Writing & Publishing Program begins in September of 2017 at its Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga, Ontario, it will be the only degree-granting program in Canada that fuses creative writing and publishing. The ultimate goal is to prepare students for a career in both writing and publishing. The unique, multifaceted program will allow students to gain experience in a variety of writing genres and media platforms, graduating with a broad skill set that gives them the opportunity to choose a variety of career paths. “The flexible, interdisciplinary program will allow students to focus on their interests and career goals,” said the College. “In addition to core courses in creative writing, publishing and literary studies, the program electives let students tailor their education in these three disciplines. They’ll also have the opportunity to take courses from Sheridan’s Arts and Business Degrees and collaborate with students in other programs.”

Relationships with audiences, writers and the publishing community are integral parts of being an author. In this program, students will be encouraged to develop these relationships through internships, connecting with literary communities, editing and publishing literary journals, writing reviews and much more. They’ll have the chance to make an impact in their community of practice and the community at large. Program Coordinator Owen Percy, Professor of Communication and Literary Studies in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, said that the ultimate goal is to prepare students for positions as wide ranging as writer, producer, editor, publisher, literary agent – or even marketing or sales representative. “What we’re looking to do is fashion a very creative, versatile student who has a critical and board skill set that’s transferable across a number of media and different contexts.”
