The University of Oklahoma’s Printing, Mailing and Document Services Division has become the first printer in the United States to install the Kodak Nexfinity Digital Press. As the largest in-plant and most award-winning university printer in the U.S., the installation of the new press expands its digital services by joining the university’s existing Kodak Nexpress SX300 Press at its 60,000-square foot facility. “The quality of the Nexfinity Press is fantastic,” said John Sarantakos, Director of Print Services at the University of Oklahoma. “We’re really excited about the possibilities it will open for the university community as it complements the excellent work we’re already producing with our existing Nexpress Press. One area that we’re really excited about expanding into with the new press is the short-run, variable-data market.”
The entire Nexfinity platform is designed to make it easy for printers to operate in a much more dynamic print marketplace. It’s built with Kodak Dynamic Imaging Technology that works by applying algorithmic adjustments to specific areas of an image, which optimizes image quality and consistency based on the image content in each area. Its LED writing system provides 256 levels of exposure on the imaging cylinder, yielding excellent, consistent quality. The result, said the OEM, produces crisp text, hard lines, soft skin tones, and beautiful skies on the same page, whether it’s for one print or for millions of prints. “With the Nexfinity Press, printers get a robust digital printing platform that delivers offset quality while driving down costs and equipping them with the flexibility and speed to handle an expansive range of applications for their customers – whether it’s an order for a few hundred or millions of impressions,” said Chris Balls, General Manager of Equipment and VP at the Print Systems Division of Kodak.
Kodak added that the new press delivers the industry’s highest information density at more than 1.8 billion pieces of image information per square inch, ensuring smooth flat fields and excellent image detail in the printed product. The Nexfinity also delivers an increased range of 83 to 152 pages per minute, expanded sheet lengths up to 48 inches, and is capable of handling stocks up to 24 point. “When all of this is combined with its colour sequence flexibility that allows for dry inks to be printed in alternative orders or combinations required by specific print jobs, the creative possibilities to help printers grow their business are extensive, Kodak added.
