Wow! What an election sweep for the federal Liberals! Canadians from coast to coast have spoken in a very loud voice. Now everyone seems to be waiting to see if Justin Trudeau’s Liberal majority can keep its promises. This includes our own columnist Elliot Schiller, who will tell you what you might expect and examine how the new government might impact your printing business when it comes to accessing government funding.
I attended the premiere of the CAMP (Canadian Association of Marketing Professionals) Awards last month, and what a glittering, high-energy and high-class event it was. We’ve got a wrap-up on page 31. Special congratulations to CAMP founders Nadine Evans and Luigi Presta for organizing such a memorable event.
The great Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns, in his poem To A Mouse, said that the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry. I know exactly what he meant! That’s why we reluctantly cancelled what would have been our second annual Print Community Conference and Tradeshow scheduled for Nov. 19 & 20. Though we did get excellent interest and commitments from exhibitors, printers and speakers alike, at the end of the day we simply did not feel that there was enough value that this event could bring to those who would have attended. We didn’t want to settle for “just another tradeshow.”
On the positive side, we’ve got another year ahead of us to reflect and assess interest from all parties before making a final decision – and you can bet we will. I would like to personally thank all those exhibitors, speakers, printers and support staff who helped us with the initial planning stages.
Once again, this issue has several fascinating features, starting with Mark Corrigan’s page 17 examination of the importance of Information Technology and how to integrate IT into your printshop workflow. You might also want to check out Diana Brown’s story on the resurgence of script lettering on page 24 and Olivia Parker’s article on the evolution, trends and future potential of wide format printing on page 28.
Finally, congratulations to the Blue Jays for giving Toronto and all of Canada such a wild playoff ride. We fell short to the eventual and well-deserved World Series winners, the pesky Kansas City Royals. Hey, there’s always next year! But we’ll certainly miss GM Alex Anthopoulous, the architect of the Jays’ post-season surge. We know he’ll do well in his future endeavours.
