April was a very busy month. I attended a wonderful open house at family-owned Cober Evolving Solutions at its main 86,000 sq. ft. facility in Kitchener, Ontario. The event was co-hosted by equipment partner HP. The highlight was Cober’s new HP Indigo 10000 – the first install in Canada. And while the 10000 is now a key part of Cober’s portfolio, the story of its success over four generations was equally remarkable. Thanks to Peter and Todd for a wonderful time.
Meanwhile, Goss opened its new Packaging Technology Center last month at its headquarters in Durham, New Hampshire, featuring a Vpak web offset press configured for packaging printing demos. Goss has invited Canadian converters, brand owners and suppliers to jointly explore new print production ideas with other printers worldwide at this new facility. Also, the IAPHC held its annual Gallery of Excellence Awards last month. We congratulate all the winners and President Bill Kidd for organizing another great evening. And don’t forget that the IAPHC’s annual Golf Tournament will take place June 25 at Wooden Sticks Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ontario.
On the student front, Ryerson University’s RyeTAGA student chapter won the coveted Helmut Kipphan Cup after presenting its journal at the Annual TAGA Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. And Gordon Graydon students won top prize for the second year in a row at the 2014 Phoenix Challenge High School Flexo Competition in Charlotte, North Carolina. Congratulations to all.
May also promises to be a busy month. The next meeting of the DIA will be May 21 at Konica Minolta in Mississauga, Ontario. And June 5 is the date of the DIA’s Annual Golf Tournament at St. Andrew’s Valley Golf Club, in Aurora, Ontario. Canadian MIS leader Avanti will hold its User Group Conference May 27 to 30 at the Park Hyatt Toronto. The next Graphics Canada show has been moved to the spring of 2015 – April 16 to 18 to be exact – instead of its usual November date. Finally, we’ll be keeping you up to date on this year’s Graph Expo show from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 in Chicago. One new feature will involve the convergence of print and plastic applications in printing. Interesting! We’ll keep you posted.
