What’s new this year at Graph Expo, Sept. 28 to Oct. 1 at Chicago’s McCormick Place? Well, just ask yourself what’s new in the entire printing industry! The “drupa of North America” has always been about how you can improve yourself and your business, offer more to your customers, gain new clients and above all, boost your bottom line. Again this year, the hard working folks at show organizer GASC have put together a wonderful event. For a complete look at all the events, special pavilions, presentations and other activities, just visit www.graphexpo.com.
Canadian technology
Some Canadian companies will have a huge presence at the show without actually occupying any specific booth. Markham, Ontario’s Insource will be there to support many of its manufacturers including Kirk Rudy, W+D North America, CDR Graphics, RISO, FlexSystems, Spiel Associates and Therm-O-Type. Mississauga, Ontario’s Sydney Stone will be hosting demos at manufacturers’ booths including Morgana, Vivid, Duplo, Challenge, Formax and MultiLoft. A host of other Canadian companies and other technology leaders who have a huge presence here, are also making the trek to the famed Windy City. To whet your appetite, here are our own “must see’ems” as you walk the show. My first suggestion: get a comfortable pair of walking (or running) shoes.
4over Booth 3837
“Super Trade Printer” 4over is introducing Custom Boxes – ideal for merchandisers in niche markets who want total design freedom and a finished product that stands out. Custom paperboard box printing is available on the brightest white stocks at competitive prices with several short-run options. 4over has also expanded its large format mix with new products such as 10mm Coroplast, mesh banners, floor graphics, see-through window vinyl and more.
ATS-Tanner Canada Booth 3808
ATS-Tanner Banding Systems will exhibit at the Wexler & Felins booth. Showcased will be the LBM-MS-V-RF-P fully automated label banding solution (after a high speed cutter), the FSB-A fully automated banding system for products that need counting, stacking and banding, and the TRS-W Transit line for banding of stacked products (after any commercial stacker). The company’s unique banding solutions integrate smoothly with the latest developments in stackers, auto cutters and folders. Integrated information processing (barcode reading/tracking, address processing, production codes, etc.) during finishing now enables fully automated packaging printing.
Avanti Booth 651
Avanti won a 2014 Must See’em in the Management Systems category for its Slingshot Advanced JDF Framework. The technology creates a seamless information and data-transfer link between your MIS software, prepress, production and bindery equipment. In short, it provides an environment where all the software and equipment in your shop can speak the same language. It connects your “islands of automation” and sends automated job instructions to a machine using JDF. That machine can then send information back to Avanti using JDF and/or the Job Messaging Format (JMF). Implementations of this nature would typically take months and be quite costly.
B&R Moll Booth 3218
Just last month B&R Moll released the Moll Compact, a folder/gluer with one of the smallest footprints in the industry. Friction-fed, it’s ideal for small format folding and finishing work, including straight-line boxes, pillow packs, coffee cup sleeves and more. Equipped with a tipper fold plate and plow-fold capability to handle multiple-fold formats, it also features a two-line, hot-melt gluing system and a standard Dial-A-Stack unit with a batch counter. When the time comes to upgrade, it can be converted to a full-size Vantage 720 system with the addition of a Versa-Fold unit. It can handle stocks from 140 g/m2 to 500 g/m2 and sizes from 50 x 102 mm up to 838 x 508 mm. Maximum linear speed is 130 m/min.
Canon USA Booth 613
Its new Océ Arizona 6100 won a Must See’em Award in the Wide Format Pressroom category. This was followed by six new imagePrograf models, and most recently, the Océ PlotWave 500 large format printing system. The 6100 is an entirely new platform designed for sign and display printers who produce about 325,000 sq. ft. of printed rigid media yearly. Comprised of the 6-colour Océ Arizona 6160 XTS and 7-colour Océ Arizona 6170 XTS, the series features an extra-large 8’x10’ vacuum table. Its flatbed architecture supports odd-shaped, heavy, smooth or pre-cut rigid media; production of high value, multi-layer applications; double-sided prints; large prints tiled over multiple boards; and edge-to-edge printing.
C.P. Bourg Booth 3631
Plenty of industry “firsts” here. The Bourg BB3202 EVA/PUR-C Binder is the only perfect binder designed to operate inline, near-line or offline with digital printers and produce books without operator intervention. The binder is fed sheet by sheet. Once the book block is completed it can be immediately glued. And because the barcode system is integrated, it offers a new level of workflow efficiency. The OEM will also be showing its continued advancements with JDF workflow/integrated PLUS, including the Dual Mode Bourg Sheet Feeder with BME Finisher (in Xerox Booth 1213). Bourg will also announce the first-of-its-kind Tandem Bourg Sheet Feeder that eliminates lost production due to loading, while driving the attached finisher to achieve greater throughput speeds. You’ll also find the company’s popular finishers in several other partners’ booths attached to marking engines and finishers.
Crawford Technologies Booth 344
The Toronto company will be showing its workflow, document management and document accessibility solutions for high-volume documents. DocketManager is a complete print management system and has been built from the ground up by printers, for printers. The Canadian company will show how to manage your entire shop from one system with tools needed to maximize efficiency, while staying competitive. Entirely browser-based, the technology ensures that you’re always connected to every aspect of your shop, accessing the system anytime from anyplace on any device. Ask its reps about system enhancements made over past year and its exclusive promotion to attendees.
