Ryerson to once again host three days of G7 training

Following up on last year’s hugely successful first-ever event in Canada, Ryerson University’s School of Graphic Communications Management (GCM) will once again be presenting Idealliance G7 Training sessions. G7 Training is a theory-based program offering a blend of lab instruction and lectures on how to apply the G7 method to any print process. G7 is Idealliance’s industry-leading set of specifications for achieving colour consistency across all print processes. It targets gray balance and is used to consistently hit clients’ colour targets while aligning to all devices, substrates and inks. A “G7 Expert” is a specialist in the field of colour management, process and quality control for proofing and printing equipment. A G7 expert is able to analyze colour and print-related issues and take corrective action to bring systems and processes to a set method, standard or specification with repeatable and predictable results. Certification is valid for two years. G7 Experts must remain employed with an Idealliance member company to maintain their G7 Expert status. Generally speaking, a G7 Professional is an in-house quality and technical expert. Here are the course details:
Course dates: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, May 16, 17 and 18, 2017.
Location: School of Graphic Communications Management at Ryerson University located at 125 Bond Street, 3rd Floor, Toronto.
Training Details. The G7 Methodology will be demonstrated across various output devices that may include the Epson 7900 inkjet, Ricoh 901 MFP and Fiery FS-100 system. G7 Certified Systems will be demonstrated during the training course, but Idealliance does not endorse any one specific system. A method of calibrating G7 by hand (The Fan Graph Method) will also be reviewed during the training course and all materials related to this calibration will be available free of charge, and are part of the course handouts.

Don Hutcheson.
Don Hutcheson.

About your instructor. As the inventor of the G7 methodology, Don Hutcheson has more than 40 years’ experience in photography, design, prepress, printing and colour science. He’s pioneered many techniques we now take for granted – such as RGB workflows, soft proofing, extended-gamut printing and digital proofing. In 1995, he started the world’s first colour management consultancy, HutchColor, LLC, to bring the concept of ICC colour management to the industry.
Today he continues to train the world’s top printers, publishers, agencies, photographers and designers through private consulting and public conferences. In 2006, as chair of the IDEAlliance GRACoL committee, he used his own Proof-to-Press calibration method (now known as G7) to produce the current GRACoL and SWOP data sets. Since then, G7 has made standardized printing and proofing easier and more accessible to thousands of printers and print buyers worldwide.
