Canadian Printing industry loses two devoted and respected leaders

Matt Fyfe.

MATT FYFE. Industry veteran Matt Fyfe, former President of Maclean Hunter Printing (Toronto), died on December 30, 2020 at the age of 84. Fyfe was a key player in taking Maclean Hunter’s magazine printing facility from an in-house operation to a growing national commercial printing company, with production facilities across Canada. He served as President of the Canadian Printing Industries Association (CPIA) and the Canadian Printing Industries Scholarship Trust Fund (CPISTF), was a board member of the Printing Industries Association (PIA) in the U.S., and worked tirelessly with those and other industry associations and organizations.
Fyfe was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1936 and met the love of his life, Sheila, in 1956. The couple came to Canada in 1958. They had a wonderful 61 years of marriage together and Matt will be sincerely missed by his wife Sheila and his children Steven (Jennifer), Carolyn (Glenn). He was predeceased by his son Scott. Fyfe enjoyed 27 years at Maclean Hunter, holding several management roles including President of Printing Operations. He was extremely well known within the Canadian and United States printing industries. At one time he enjoyed coaching and refereeing at the Markham Soccer Club in Markham, Ontario, eventually becoming its President. He was a long-time member of York Downs Golf Club and, during his retirement, enjoyed traveling with Sheila to what he referred to as his second home – Siesta Key in Sarasota County, Florida.
Don Gain.

DON GAIN. On December 31, 2020, 35-year print industry veteran Don Gain, former President and owner of Toronto’s Harmony Printing for 28 years, died at 71 following an heroic battle with cancer. Also active in numerous industry associations, he was past Chairman of the Board for the OPIA and past Chairman of the CPIA. Gain also served on the advisory board of the Graphic Communications Management (GCM) program at Ryerson University in downtown Toronto. He was also a past Chairman of the Canadian Printing Industries Scholarship Trust Fund (CPISTF). The CPIA eventually recognized him for distinguished service in  2008, when he received an honourary lifetime membership in the association.
One of Canada’s leading print service providers, Toronto’s Harmony Printing was in business for 52 years. The company provided a wide range of services including direct mail, fulfillment, cross-media services and much more. Don Gain, Don Gain Jr., Ruby Thomas and Robert Kadis formed Harmony Printing’s Executive Team. In a previous interview with Graphic Arts Magazine, Gain explained his unwavering support for our industry organizations: “These associations are printers working for printers, acting as consultants as well as government watchdogs. They lobby government relentlessly to make decisions that are in the best interests of our industry.”
