The goal of Ryerson University’s School of Graphic Communications Management (GCM) and its four-year program is to graduate individuals who will become effective and skilled professionals in the printing and graphic arts industries – with a solid foundation of education and technical training to enable them to develop as professional managers. Well, if GCM’s Annual Awards Night held Thursday, November 5, 2015 at the Heidelberg Centre in downtown Toronto is any indication, our industry is in very, very good hands. Here are the winners.
Canadian Printing Industries Scholarship Trust Fund (CPISTF) winners
This scholarship was initiated by the Canadian Printing Industries in 1971 through the efforts of a group of visionary printing industry executives. Its primary objective is to attract the most talented young people to the printing industry by providing financial assistance to them while they’re enrolled in a graphic arts management or technical program. The scholarship is available to students entering the GCM program with an 80% or greater high-school average, and who successfully complete an interview with a leader in the printing industry. It’s renewed annually for four years if the student maintains a 3.00 GPA. The awards were presented by Don Gain, Chairman of the CPISTF and President of Harmony Printing.
First-year winners were Chelsea Jo Antonucci, Megan Aquino, Andreanne Aviso, Annika Boyer, Liam Brookes, Amelia Chamberlain, Megan Dienes Alderdice, Danielle Dobos, Tyanne Grant, Igor Grusecki, William Huff, Eleesa Jacob, Joanna Maj, Lindsay Martin, Andrea Mendoza, Sidra Nadim, Grace Park, Jenny Pham, Joy Uddin, Melissa Wroe and Kaitlin Wilson. Second-year through fourth-year winners were Alyssa Andino, Catriona Bularan, Alexandra Garneau, Alison Krous, Daniel Langsford, Tracy Laranjo, Tabrina Loch-Williams, Sarah Pazzano, Anna Tang and Criselda Tejada.
Dean’s List winners
The Dean’s List recognizes exceptional students who’ve achieved a minimum GPA of 3.67 for the previous academic year while taking a minimum of four courses per term. The awards were presented by Dr. Jean Mason, Associate Dean Faculty & Student Affairs, Faculty of Communication & Design. Best Bound Book Award. Presented to a student who demonstrates technical excellence in creating a hand-made casebook. Winner: Jessica Rocha Da Silva.
Chia Tse Award. Recognizes the student who achieved top overall academic standing in the third year of the program. Winner: Diondra Filicetti.
C.J. Graphics Inc. Award. For a group project or paper that demonstrates the benefits of sustainability in the printing industry. Winners: Alyzeh Abdul Ahad and Marija Dikova.
College & University Print Management Association of Canada Award. Presented to a student in second year who demonstrates overall excellence in academic work, shows financial need, and excels in the Printing Processes I and Printing Processes II courses from the previous academic year. Winner: Humaira Imtiyaz.
Dennis Mock Student Leadership Award. Recognizes graduating students who’ve made notable extracurricular contributions to their School or academic program department, or to Ryerson as a whole. Winners: Christopher Ambedkar and Elizabeth Wood.
Eclipse Imaging Scholarship Award. This scholarship is awarded to the student with the highest grades in GRA 103 & 203. Winner: Catherine Dumschat.
Electronic Document Systems Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes and supports the next generation of professionals for the Document Management and Graphic Communications industry. Winner: Tracy Laranjo.
FCAD Exchange: Dean’s Travel Bursary. Awarded to a full-time student who’s maintained a clear academic standing and will be participating in an approved international exchange program. Winner: Zachary Lopez.
Foundation of Flexographic Technical Association Scholarship. Recipients are full-time students currently enrolled in a 4-year college or university program and majoring in a program with flexography as a course of study, and who have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Winners: Daniel Langsford, Elina Shafigullina and Kim Sipkens.
Francesco Giorgio Memorial Award. Presented to the fourth-year team presenting the most innovative business plan for a new graphic communications company. Winners: Sarah Aspler, Melissa Binsted, Christina MacCallum and Stephanie Murray.
Gary Hanna Graphic Communications Award. Presented to a student currently in third or fourth year, with a minimum Cumulative GPA of 3.00 and demonstrated financial need. Winner: Vanessa Blum.
GCM Student Representative Award. Presented to the GCM Student Representative who has worked tirelessly to enhance student involvement in GCM activities. Winner: Scott Morgan.
GCM Service Award. Recognizes a deserving GCM student. Winner: Ramage Zaki.
GK Teamwear Award. Presented to the student achieving the highest standing in Printing Processes in the first year of the program. Winner: Xiaoying Ma.
Hans Müller Sr. Award of Excellence in Graphic Arts Finishing. Presented to the student earning first-place standing in Binding and Finishing courses in second year. Winner: Julia Tincombe.
Jeff Watson Memorial Award. Presented to the student achieving the highest standing in the course Management of Advanced Technology (GRA 743 and GRA 843) in the fourth year of the program. Winner: Melissa Binsted.
Mary Black Leadership Award. Presented to the student who exemplifies leadership skills in coordinating and hosting the Annual GCM Colloquium Event. Winner: Christopher Ambedkar.
Narinder & Deepa Lal Award. Presented to a student who has completed first year of GCM, holds a minimum GPA of 2.67 and demonstrates financial need. Winner: Agan Leyli.
PAC Awards of Excellence. Presented to the student with the highest averages in all first-year core courses. Winners: Kara Sidoruk (highest average in core courses and highest marks layout & typography); Xiaoying Ma (second highest average in core courses); and Mohamad-Ali Machlab (second highest marks in layout & typography).
Paperboard Packaging Alliance Scholarship. Presented to students who compete in the Paperboard Packaging Student Challenge and who concentrate their educational interests in packaging. Winners: Arnold Chan, Alex Chheun, Sandy Kwan and Amy Nguyen.
R.B. Tom Atkins Scholarship. Presented to a full-time student currently enrolled in second year or higher of the program who has a minimum Cumulative GPA of 3.33 and is actively involved in at least two areas of cultural, athletic and/or political life at Ryerson. Winner: Vanessa Blum.
Schawk Canada Inc. Most Improved Award. Presented to the student demonstrating the greatest overall improvement in GPA between first and second year. Winner: Maura McMullen.
Tag and Label Manufacturers Institute Inc. Scholarship. Winners: Daniel Langsford and Elina Shafigullina.
The Clifford Hawes Memorial Scholarship Award. Presented to the student that best exemplifies Ryerson spirit through scholastic leadership, initiative and deportment while in second year or higher. Winner: Jennifer Huynh.
The manroland Canada Inc. Accounting Award. Presented to the student who has excelled in Accounting courses ACC 100 and ACC 406 in the last academic year. Winner: Daniel Langsford.
The William Somerville Memorial Award for Excellence. Presented to the student who demonstrated excellence in electronic prepress technology (GRA103, 203, 323, 423, 533 and 633) in the first three years of the program. Winner: Diondra Filicetti.
Xplor Central Chapter Scholarship. Presented to a student who is currently enrolled in a program of higher education (usually a master’s program) following completion of the Ryerson Graphic Communications Management program. Winner: Scott Morgan.
Xplor Membership Scholarship Award. Recipients are selected based on their pursuit of a career in the electronic document and communications industry, academic achievement, and participation in school activities and service to the community. Winners: Tracy Laranjo, Scott Morgan and Shanley Maguire.
Closing remarks
Ian Baitz, Chair of the School of Graphic Communications Management, closed the event by giving special thanks to the faculty, instructors and staff who inspire students daily. He went on to say: “Thank you also to those who made this 2015 Awards Night possible. In particular, we would like to acknowledge our student hosts Caitlin Cuoto and Zachary Lopez, our student designer Andrew Ouzounis, our student volunteers who gave freely of their time, and our administrative support staff Marietta Canlas, Taras Karpiuk, and Tannisha Lambert for their impressive behind-the-scenes effectiveness. Thank you as well to Vicky Liu for her assistance with the printed program and Dilani Balasubramaniam for the photography.”
