Toronto-based Colmar Inks acquired by Sun Chemical

Sun Chemical (Parsippany, NJ) has entered into an agreement to acquire certain assets and liabilities of Colmar Inks Corporation based in Toronto, Ontario. Colmar is a manufacturer of liquid inks and coatings for the corrugated and paper packaging market, as well as specialty inks for the rod coatings market. Its customer lists, contracts and finished inventory will be included in the acquisition. The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of 2016. The acquisition will allow Sun Chemical to expand its liquid-ink customer base in Canada and further strengthen its market position as the leading supplier of lithographic, flexographic and gravure inks and coatings in the region.

In January of 1984, Colmar Ink and Chemical Corporation was formed to acquire and operate the Hendershot Inks Company. This company was a family-owned business, and had operated in the Ontario and Quebec markets for over 40 years. Its core business included lithographic, flexographic and gravure inks. Colmar is currently one of the largest suppliers of ink to the Canadian corrugated industry. Its market share is 60% of post-print corrugated ink in Ontario. Due to the increasing requirement for inks for high-graphic applications, together with specialized technical back-up, 1998 saw a separate “High Graphics” division formed under the “Ramcolor” banner. The new division is headed by Andrew Dymon, an acknowledged expert in aqueous “High Graphics” applications. Colmar Corporation is owned and managed by Ralph Marshall, who has spent his entire career in the ink manufacturing industry, and is highly respected for his charismatic no-nonsense business approach. Marshall has a B.A. from McMaster University, an M.B.A. from York University, is a past president of the Canadian Printing Ink Manufacturers Association, and has served as a Director of the Canadian Paper Box Manufacturers Association.
