One of Canada’s leading print service providers, Toronto’s Harmony Printing, is closing its doors after 52 years. One of our industry’s most knowledgeable, respected and admired printers, Harmony President Don Gain, purchased Harmony Printing in 1988 and had guided it from a small shop to one of the most successful mid-sized printers in the country. Despite being in receivership, the majority of its employees have been given opportunities to work with MI5 Print and Digital in Mississauga, Ontario. Harmony Printing provided a wide range of services including direct mail, mailing and fulfillment, cross-media services and many more. Don Gain, Don Gain Jr., Ruby Thomas and Robert Kadis formed Harmony Printing’s Executive Team.
Gain’s support of industry organizations such as the Canadian Printing Industries Association (CPIA), and the Ontario Printing and Imaging Association (OPIA) and others has been unwavering. I recall in a previous interview for Graphic Arts Magazine, his exact words: “These associations are printers working for printers, acting as consultants as well as well as government watchdogs. They lobby government relentlessly to make decisions that are in the best interests of our industry. They also welcome feedback.”
Gain served on the advisory board of the Graphic Communications Management program at Ryerson University in Toronto and was also chairman of the Canadian Printing Industries Scholarship Trust Fund. The CPIA recognized him for distinguished service in 2002. Six years later, in 2008, he received an honourary lifetime membership in the CPIA.
