The CJF (Canadian Journalism Foundation) works constantly to facilitate excellence in journalism. Now more than ever, with democracy’s principles under attack, it’s important to celebrate the work of professional journalists. The annual awards honour significant contributions to journalism and provide fellowship opportunities for early-career journalists. The CJF invites you to make a submission or nomination, and share with friends and colleagues whose work deserves to be recognized. Here are the awards that will be presented at the CJF Annual Awards Night, Thursday, June 13, at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in downtown Toronto:
CJF Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism.
This award honours a Canadian organization whose journalism effects profound and positive change in the community it serves. There are two winners in both large and small media categories. New this year, applicants can make their submission simultaneously to the Michener Award through a joint online form.
CJF Lifetime Achievement Award. This award recognizes an individual who has made an outstanding lifetime contribution to journalism in Canada. Nominations are accepted in all categories of journalism.
CJF-Facebook Journalism Project News Literacy Award.
This award celebrates efforts to encourage Canadians to understand and critically assess the quality of news in their community, as well as the practices that underpin factual reporting as key contributions to Canadian democracy. The winning organization will receive a $10,000 prize.
The Landsberg Award.
This award recognizes a working journalist doing exceptional research, analysis and writing through a gender lens about women’s equality issues in Canada. The award recipient will receive a $5,000 prize from the Canadian Women’s Foundation, co-presenter of this award.
CJF-CBC Indigenous Journalism Fellowships.
These fellowships allow two Indigenous journalists early in their careers the opportunity to explore an issue of interest, while being hosted by CBC News for one month at its Indigenous Unit in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A $3,000 stipend will be provided and travel, accommodation and reasonable expenses will be covered.
Tom Hanson Photojournalism Award.
This award offers an early-career photojournalist a six-week paid internship at The Canadian Press head office in Toronto, providing an opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment and gain national exposure
CJF-Globe and Mail Internship for Investigative Journalism.
This internship brings an early-career journalist to The Globe and Mail to pursue a six-month investigative journalism project under the guidance of editors and senior reporters.
Other awards include: The Atkinson Fellowship in Public Policy; Martin Wise Goodman Canadian Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University; and the William Southam Journalism Fellowship.
