TC Transcontinental (Montreal), a leader in flexible packaging in North America and Canada’s largest printer, has acquired the assets of Enviroplast Incorporated (Anjou, Quebec), a company dedicated to the recycling of flexible plastics. The equipment acquired by TC will be used for converting plastic waste recovered from sorting facilities and other commercial, industrial and agricultural sources, into recycled plastic granules. Enviroplast’s environmental responsibility primarily covers solutions that transform and fully ‘reinstate’ polyethylene resin (LDPE) within the production cycle – helping to create bags made out of 100% resin of recycled plastic. The company currently processes and transforms over 2,000 metric tons of recyclable materials each month. Its specialized equipment can process one-cubic-metre blocks and seven-metre rolls for a total weight of up to two tons.
“The circular economy is the way of the future,” said Sylvain Levert, Senior VP of the Recycling Group at TC Transcontinental Packaging. “This equipment acquisition is part of our goal to vertically integrate the recycling of plastics in our packaging production chain in Canada, the United States and Latin America, ultimately ensuring stable procurement of recycled resin. We are proud of this first step and are counting on the collaboration of public and private stakeholders to meet the plastic recycling challenge, and to promote the creation in Québec of a centre of expertise in the circular economy of plastics,” he added.
The corporation’s goal is to differentiate itself by offering eco-responsible packaging products that contain recycled plastic, to accelerate their development, and to create a true circular economy of plastic that’s beneficial from an environmental, economic and social standpoint. Flexible plastic packaging ensures optimal product protection, facilitates transportation and helps extend product shelf life., said TC Transcontinental. It added that it shares the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s common vision of a circular economy for plastic, where plastic never becomes waste. Therefore, the company is a signatory of the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment. This involves a committed goal by 2025, for 100% of its plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable, in addition to achieving a 10% use of post-consumer recycled content on average by weight, across all of its plastics product lines.
