Start-up launches paper book that connects to tablets via a unique type of augmented reality

Magik Book is a new printed book that integrates with a tablet.

Magik Book, a new printed book that integrates with a tablet, has been launched by the Portugal-based start-up of the same name. With each paged turned, the device can respond with synchronized videos, animations, music, images, 3D models and more. Magik Book is designed as a versatile marketing tool for use in stores and showrooms, as a product catalogue, or as a means of offering customers interactive experiences. Users can also utilize Magik Book to link their physical stores with their online presence. The book is bound by a case which folds out into a stand, angling the device in the direction of the user, and with the book itself laid flat. A custom-built app shows content tailored to each page of the book, in an augmented reality experience with the physical object in the hands of the customer. “Even in the digital age, people have strong relationships with real-life objects – not the least of which are printed books. That was the concept that drove the creation of Magik Book,” said Hugo Ribeiro, CEO and Founder of Magik Book. “Magik Book combines physical and digital with traditional and contemporary, setting itself apart as a marketing solution and offering brands real opportunities to stand out in a crowded market. Integrating both elements makes for a more personal and memorable customer experience.” Magik Book uses the company’s patented advanced magnetic field technology, which takes advantage of the compass and other sensors within digital devices. The technology requires no batteries or pairing, and is compatible with all iOS and Android devices. Apps can be tailor-made to each client and can include media such as panoramic photos, interactive videos, or digital product modeling. Sales are facilitated through a click-to-buy option or an email update registration, and guide consumers to the brand’s online presence.

Magik Book blurs the line between traditional marketing methods and more modern marketing technology, also known as martech. The latter is worth an estimated $34 billion worldwide according to recent studies. Meanwhile, the global “internet of things in retail” market is expected to be worth $94 billion by 2025, also according to recent research. The company also announced the launch of an online platform – The Magik Book Creator – on which small to medium-sized businesses can design their own catalogue and upload digital content to synchronize to each page. The tool will enable brands to custom-build their own Magik Book experiences and will also allow for smaller orders.
