Label Academy publishes new self-adhesive labels book

The UK-based Label Academy, a global education resource for the label and package printing industry, has published a new book covering the self-adhesive labels market, aimed at converters and brand owners looking for an in-depth understanding of the technologies and end-use requirements in this growing market sector. Edited by Labelexpo Strategic Director Andy Thomas-Emans, Self-Adhesive Labels: A technical guide for label converters and brand owners is the latest addition to the Label Academy’s best-selling series of expert-led books focusing specifically on label-industry technology and markets. It’s the first time the Label Academy has produced a ‘stand-alone’ guide on the topic.
The book features dedicated chapters on each component of the self-adhesive label laminate – including the silicone coated release liner, adhesive technology, the difference between paper and film face stocks, and the specification, performance and testing of the finished label laminate. The book also covers the sustainability aspects of self-adhesive materials, a subject which has assumed greater importance in recent years as legislators and brands turn their attention to eliminating landfill waste from the packaging production chain. The book also draws upon workshop presentations delivered at Labelexpo Europe 2019 by a panel of industry experts.

“Stan Avery’s groundbreaking discoveries of how to die-cut a label from a laminated material and apply it using the interaction of adhesion and release forces, remain the foundation of today’s pressure-sensitive label technology,” said Andy Thomas-Emans. “This book follows the development of the self-adhesive label industry from Avery’s original work, and looks in depth at the way the different components of the label are manufactured and how they interact during die-cutting, application to a container and in end-use environments. The book is an essential read for anyone wishing to succeed in such a competitive sector.” The Label Academy pointed out that it will be adding further titles to its book series in the coming months.

The Label Academy is a global training resource for the label and package printing industry. Its concept was pioneered by industry veteran Mike Fairley who founded Labels & Labeling Magazine. The move was in response to a reduction in the number of dedicated printing colleges and the need to standardize training across the world. The organization added that the label industry also has its own specific training needs – it has some of the widest range of materials, printing processes and finishing solutions of any printing sector. The organization is working with other training experts and authors to ensure that the Label Academy provides up-to-date and relevant training materials for the industry. Labels & Labeling has been the global voice of the label and package printing industry since 1978, while featuring the latest technological advances, industry news, case studies and opinions. It’s a leading resource for printers, brand owners, designers and suppliers alike.
