The results of the study, just revealed and conducted for Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) in 2014, showed that consumer demand for sustainable products and practices is creating a strong movement that affects all businesses. Consumers want to know that the brands they’re supporting with their purchases engage in sustainable practices, according to Asia Pulp & Paper (APP), one of the largest pulp and paper companies in the world. In fact, the survey found that nearly 60% of consumers prefer to have sustainability and environmental-related information on product labels. “As people put more of an emphasis on sustainability when they make purchases, it’s crucial for brands to adapt accordingly,” APP added. Below is a list of industries (and corresponding findings) where consumers want to see sustainability information on product labels, according to the survey:
- Paper and packaging (62%)
- Food (62%)
- Healthcare products (51%)
- Beauty/cosmetics (47%)
- Pharmaceutical products (43%)
- Clothing (41%)
The survey also found that more than 77% of Canadians wanted sustainable packaging for food products, and nearly half (46%) are willing to pay more for earth-friendly/deforestation-free/sustainable paper products – or products in such packaging.
On February 5, 2013, APP launched its groundbreaking sustainability initiative Forest Conservation Program (FCP), the most significant part of which was the immediate end to all natural forest clearance throughout its entire supply chain with the eventual goal of zero deforestation. APP’s Forest Conservation Program includes the following strategies:
- Forest clearance moratorium
- Protection of peatland
- Implementation of FPIC and social principles
- Sustainable sourcing across the entire supply chain
- Transparency and independent monitoring
- Restoration commitment of 1 million hectares
