Our closing issue for the year is dedicated to colour. Colour science is a topic that has been critical in our industry for decades now. In the past, achieving good colour would have been an art form – a delicate synergy between the pressmen and his press. Today, while it may still be a mystery to some, colour management has been mostly reduced to a set of procedures, which use technology to produce predictable results. Of course this does not mean that everyone can be a colour expert, but it does mean that the route to having the answers is easier to find.
Chris Smyth takes us through some of the relevant conversations about colour. And while we have some of the answers, in other cases new questions are just emerging. The article covers all the hot topics including OBAs, extended gamut, and extending colour management to new technologies. For example, how do we manage colour with full-colour 3D printers? And if you are thinking that the 3D printing thing is still far away think again! This weekend I saw a Makerbot on sale at Winners! It was right next to the ties and box sweaters for dad. Now there’s a cool present!
Technology is always appearing faster than we generally think it would. I had the opportunity to check out the new Highcon die cutting system at C.J. Graphics. Lee Eldridge shared with me the beautifully die cut holiday cards the company created. And on a machine powered by lasers – what’s there not to like?
In addition to wishing all of you a happy and healthy start to 2016, I would also like to congratulate one of our columnists, Diana Brown and her husband on their wedding and her upcoming transition to Mrs. Varma! I’ve never seen a bride make so many amazing pieces of décor from paper. All the best to you both.
