Print, digital, and digital print

This issue is an interesting mix of things printed, digital, and digitally printed. Our lead article focuses on PDF/VT technology. The “VT” stands for variable transactional, explains Jason Lisi, Associate Professor at Ryerson University. The article explains the benefits of switching to this workflow. PDF is an integral part of our industry, with native files being much less common in customer submissions. Further, our approach to workflow must change for digital press technology. These front-end considerations are increasingly more important as digital press technology improves production speed.

Diana Brown provides us with a drupa update. She reports that speed is indeed one area of focus for digital press technology. Increasing press speeds will continue to blur the lines between which jobs are “digital” and which are “offset”. This will in turn increase the front-end requirements as discussed by Lisi.

Diana will examine what some of the major manufacturers will be showcasing at the world’s largest trade show for the printing industry, including HP, Heidelberg, Goss, Fujifilm, and KBA.

Myrna Penny reports on a DIA meeting where paper was the star this time around. The article summarizes very interesting facts about the many advantages of using paper (such as sustainability). If you enjoyed our last month’s (green issue) article about paper and its eco-benefits, this is a must read.

We are starting to release quick videos of our own to help those of you who are a bit too busy to sit down and enjoy the read. You can take a look at the editorial preview video on our website. We will try to do as many as my lack of acting talent will allow. You may notice that my introduction in the video features a different last name.

I am saying goodbye to my maiden name as a result of being a blissfully happy newlywed. If you are a Twitter user you may have noticed that I have already updated my user name to @NLumby. If you are not a user, join the fun of half a billion users, follow me, and perhaps tweet about the issue!
