Spring challenge

While it may or may not feel (or look) like it in Toronto, spring is finally here. Hopefully by the time you read this we are well above that dreaded zero degrees, because as I write there is still snow on the ground. To me springtime feels like a fresh start. Whether it’s because the planet is sprouting green or that I can finally peek out from under many layers of sweaters, it feels like the right time to reenergize. Often it’s a good time to look at the resolutions you set way back in January and evaluate how far off the path you have veered. For the month of April I would like to propose a few challenges to get you into that spring-cleaning mood.
Judge a book by its cover
Take a look at your reception area. Are the same printed pieces gathering dust on the shelves? It’s time to clean up the front of the house. Why not go through your recent work, and pick out new pieces you can feature in your reception area. While you are at it, I encourage the same online. If you have had the same scrolling banner photos for the last year (or even years) maybe it’s time for an update. After all, your potential new and existing clients will judge you on your work, so keep it fresh.
Keep it safe
In this month’s issue we have a really wonderful resource for your health and safety questions. John Piggott, work safety and environmental issue consultant, has consolidated a go-to chart for much of the legislation around health and safety as it relates to print. Take a look at the list and make sure that you are up-to-date on the rules. If you are in Ontario take a look at the AODA legislation information in the article. This is a fairly new act that impacts all places of business. Are there ways to make your company more accessible and inclusive?
Paint it green
Of course with the approaching Earth Day on April 22nd think of a way to make your impact. We have a tendency to think small/individual on this matter. For example you may think: “I’ll make sure to turn out the lights”. That is wonderful, and certainly every little bit helps, but why not think bigger? For example, install motion sensor switches in the plant so that everyone uses a bit less energy. Or even bigger, participate in a clean energy program. Even more importantly, spread the message of sustainability for print! We know printing is often chastised as being unsustainable, and wrongfully so! For example, did you know that using paper in fact contributes to growing trees? For more fun facts to share with your clients you can check out websites like www.twosides.us!
Have fun with these three spring challenges and as always, enjoy the issue.
