View from the publisher – April 2015

I’d like to begin by mentioning, as many already have, the retirement of Richard Armstrong after fourteen years as President of Heidelberg Canada – and thirty amazing years as a leader in the industry. Richard is one of those rare individuals who will be remembered not just for his for his professionalism, but for his kind and engaging personality and ever-present smile. So while news of his departure saddened us, we were delighted to learn that The Canadian Printing Industries Association (CPIA) subsequently nominated Richard for its highest accolade – an Honourary Life Membership. “The CPIA would like to acknowledge the patronage that this gentleman has provided the industry throughout his many years,” said Brian Ellis, Executive Director of CPIA and former Marketing Director at Heidelberg Canada. We have a short news item about Richard on page 9.
Graphics Canada, Canada’s largest and longest-running printing tradeshow, is heading into its 52nd year and we’ll be there April 16-18 at the International Centre in Mississauga to cover its events, people, activities and exhibitors for you. Please stop by our booth (2011) at the top of Hall 2, say hello, and enter our free draw for a fabulous prize. You can also subscribe to free to our printed editions there. And watch for a review of the show in our May issue.
Speaking of reviews, The Canadian Printable Electronics Industry Association (CPEIA) will be hosting the 2015 Canadian Printed Electronics Symposium in Montreal for the very first time. The event takes place in Montreal April 21-22 and we’ll have it covered for you. I’m also happy to report that the ISA’s International Sign Expo April 8-11 in Las Vegas sold out three weeks before it even opened. The tradeshow floor is about 215,000 square feet, making it the largest in ISA history.
From the strategies of networking, to the quiet success of sheetfed, to innovations in Braille printing, to conveying flavours through packaging design, to advice on how to obtain government funding for your new product, this month’s issue has quite a varied line-up of helpful and interesting features. We also have an abundance of new products this month, both on page 11 and in our news pages, as the equipment manufacturers worldwide and distributors here in Canada anticipate a busy spring and summer. Many of these news products made their debut at recent tradeshows here in North America and around the globe – and you can expect some new product previews at Graphics Canada too. We hope to see you there.
As always, stay positive and stay focused.
