View from the publisher – December 2015

Well, wasn’t that an interesting year! We ran more than our usual share of news, new products, special event information and timely features on topics such as packaging, wide format, 3D printing, textile printing, printed electronics and more – while keeping you up to date on all that’s happening in traditional offset and digital.

I’d like to specifically thank our online readers and visitors who helped us increase our website traffic substantially compared to last year. Thanks also to the unwavering support of all of our advertisers, both in our printed issues and on our website. We’re looking forward to another successful year in 2016 as we continue to keep you up-to-date on the changes and challenges facing our industry.

Once again, this issue has several fascinating features, starting with Chris Smyth’s deep dive into the current and future technology and challenges of Colour Management on page 17. On page 26, our News Editor and Senior Writer Tony Curcio has chosen what he feels are the top news stories for each month of 2015. You might also want to check out Peter Dulis’ feature on wide format multifunction inkjet printers from some of the industry’s major equipment manufacturers on page 28. Diana Brown’s page 30 story on the trend to zero waste in the packaging industry is another must-read. In it, she introduces you to the first zero-waste grocery store in the world! Our government funding specialist Elliot Schiller, on page 32, will tell you what qualifies for funding regarding your shop’s innovation efforts. On page 34, our marketing guru Nadine Evans predicts what will be hot in the realm of marketing in 2016. Not surprisingly, compelling content should continue to rule.

Finally, congratulations to C.J. Graphics. More than 1,500 guests attended its 28th annual party and fundraiser December 4 held at its production facility in Etobicoke, Ontario. During the evening, both live and silent auctions were held with all proceeds going to the C.J. Skateboard Park & School founded by C.J. Graphics’ President Jay Mandarino. Congratulations also to the Edmonton Eskimos on their thrilling Grey Cup win over the surprising Ottawa Redblacks.

It’s that time of year to get some well-earned rest and relaxation, indulge in your favourite foods and drinks, and think about the reasons why we all work so hard in this crazy industry – our friends, our family and our loved ones. From all of us at Graphic Arts Magazine, including our writers, designers, production staff and webmaster – have a wonderful Christmas, and a holiday season filled with hope and joy!

As always, stay positive and stay focused.
