The new software is designed for Artec 3D’s proprietary line of professional-grade handheld scanners. The new updates focus on post-processing. “Now, a relative novice can produce a 3D scan and turn it into a viable model in minutes,” said the company. Its Autopilot mode in particular is a notable new feature that allows even a ‘beginner’ to scan effectively. The system asks some basic questions, then auto aligns the relevant scans and automatically selects the right algorithm for that particular data set.
“It’s virtually impossible to tell the difference between a 3D model created using Artec Studio 11’s Autopilot mode, and one that was created manually by an expert user,” said Artyom Yukhin, Artec 3D President and CEO. “By making the process more intuitive, we’re making the integration of 3D scanning easier. With Artec’s advanced algorithms built into the system, users can create a professional-grade 3D model in a matter of minutes.” Expert users, however, will still have access to a wide range of adjustments.

Even when a user selects manual mode, Artec Studio 11 will streamline the workflow by auto-aligning the scan data with one click. Texture mapping is about ten times faster than before and a series of intuitive geometry tools allows easier manipulation of any model or output. The technology also provides quick previews in real time and can also be viewed on a tablet.
Artec Studio 11 integrates with CAD programs such as Geomagic Design X and Solidworks to create a seamless workflow. Users can export directly to these software packages – and there’s also a Solidworks plug-in that helps convert scans into a CAD-ready designs. The technology is also now compatible with Nvidia Quadro and comes with an improved interface for tablet use – an increasingly important accessory for a handheld scanner, said the company.
