W+D (Lenexa, Kansas), a leading manufacturer of envelope converting, inserting and printing technology, has released the world’s first envelope converting solution for digital press owners looking to leverage the 1:1 personalization and data-driven print capabilities of their high quality inkjet or toner printers for direct-mail envelopes – the W+D 410i Intelligent Envelope Finishing System.
“The power of the envelope is unique and significant in the world of direct-mail marketing. No longer is personalized direct mail relegated to just a postcard or self-mailers,” said Andrew Schipke, Vice-President of Marketing and Strategic Sales for W+D. “W+D now takes the power of the envelope to a new production level with data-driven, digitally printed envelopes with engaging haptic finishing, windows, shapes, folds and foiling – all done quicker and at significant production cost savings. With our W+D 410i Intelligent Envelope Finishing System and any intelligent inserter (or our W+D BB Intelligent Direct Mail Inserter), completely piece-tracked personalized, data-driven direct-mail packages are now a reality.”
The OEM added that what’s new and unique to the 410i is that every printed envelope blank that goes into the machine, and every envelope that leaves the machine, is scanned. Each blank has a printed individual data matrix code for unique identification. The data matrix code is printed so that it’s located under the seal flap area on the envelope. This code is read at the infeed of the 410i before being delivered. Cameras installed in the 410i scan the code and check for readability while corresponding software evaluates the result and generates a report on a piece-by-piece level. When the job is finished, this report is stored on the customer’s server together with the corresponding statistics in the form of a .csv file. This is the first time, said the company, that complete order tracking is guaranteed for each individual envelope, from converting/finishing through inserting to a completed direct-mail piece.
