G7 Training is a theory-based program offering a blend of lab instruction and lectures on how to apply the G7 method to any print process. G7 is Idealliance’s industry-leading set of specifications for achieving colour consistency across all print processes. It targets gray balance and is used to consistently hit clients’ colour targets while aligning to all devices, substrates and links. A “G7 Expert” is a specialist in the field of colour management, processes and quality control for proofing and printing equipment.
A G7 expert is able to analyze colour and print-related issues and take corrective action to bring systems and processes under control – as a set method, standard or specification with repeatable and predictable results. Certification is valid for two years. G7 Experts must remain employed with an Idealliance Member Company to maintain their G7 Expert status. Generally speaking, a G7 Professional is an in-house quality/technical expert. In this course, G7 methodology will be demonstrated across various digital output devices.
Who should attend and what you’ll achieve
This is a valuable learning experience – especially for offset and digital press operators, pressroom supervisors, prepress supervisors and technicians, quality assurance managers and printing equipment suppliers. Upon successful completion of the Certification exam, attendees may become a Certified G7 Expert or G7 Professional, depending upon the certification level they selected at registration (and will eventually attain through successful completion of the examination). A G7 Expert maintains Idealliance Corporate or Consultant Membership and is listed in the Idealliance database of Certified Experts, Professionals and Qualified Masters. A G7 Professional may also conduct and submit annual renewal applications.

About your instructor
As the inventor of G7 Methodology, Don Hutcheson has more than 40 years’ experience in photography, design, prepress, printing and colour science. He’s pioneered many techniques we now take for granted – such as RGB workflows, soft proofing, extended-gamut printing and digital proofing. In 1995, he started the world’s first colour management consultancy, HutchColor, LLC, to bring the concept of ICC colour management to the printing and graphic arts industry. Today, he continues to train the world’s top printers, publishers, agencies, photographers and designers through private consulting and public conferences. In 2006, as chair of the IDEAlliance GRACoL committee, he used his own proof-to-press calibration method (now known as G7) to produce the current GRACoL and SWOP data sets. Since then, G7 has made standardized printing and proofing easier and more accessible to thousands of printers and print buyers worldwide.
