Toronto’s Ryerson University RyeTAGA (Ryerson Technical Association of the Graphic Arts) Student Chapter has won the prestigious 2018 Helmut Kipphan Student Publication Award for the 7th time in 10 years! For many years, the name RyeTAGA has been synonymous with the GCM (Graphic Communications Management) course at Ryerson University, and a source of pride for the university itself. “Year after year, RyeTAGA has strived to publish a research journal that’s unsurpassed in research, creativity and production quality,” said Trung Nguyen, Ryerson Faculty Advisor for RyeTAGA. “In March at the 70th Annual TAGA Technical Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, eight student members of the RyeTAGA team presented its 2018 RyeTAGA Technical Research Journal for judging. We’re happy to announce that we’ve brought back the prestigious Helmut Kipphan Cup to Ryerson and the School of Graphic Communications Management – for the 7th time in 10 years! This year’s focus for the production of our journal was to connect students with the industry, while demonstrating the value of networking and building career-lasting industry connections by working with several internal and external stakeholders.”
The journal was written and designed by Ryerson GCM students and printed at Toronto’s Flash Reproductions on paper supplied by Spicers Canada. It featured digital embellishments from Konica Minolta Canada with Smyth sewn and button-and-tie finishing courtesy of Specialties Graphic Finishers of Toronto. The textured inspirational drawing taken from both western and eastern traditions can be seen throughout the journal – from its design and layout to its substrate use and binding. The inside pages are centered towards the spine of the book. This was an intentional design decision to make the publication stand out from the rest – and just another example of how Ryerson’s RyeTAGA continues to be on the cutting edge of innovation. Since the establishment of the TAGA Student Chapters in 1985, students have produced technical publications to showcase their research. Starting in 1993, the TAGA Board of Directors has awarded a Grand Prize Award to recognize their efforts in producing TAGA Student Publications. Renamed in 2006 as the Helmut Kipphan Cup (after Dr. Helmut Kipphan for his time, support, and advocacy of the TAGA Student Chapters), the award is now a ‘traveling trophy’ that’s presented to the school that’s produced a student publication that excels in technical content, print quality and design. The student publication is intended to be a collection of student research in the associated areas of graphic technology.
