The recently announced deal will combine two of Atlantic Canada’s largest magazine publishing and content companies to create one diversified, information, media and events company. The Saltscapes team will join Advocate’s Metro Guide Publishing team – without any anticipated job reductions. “The strengths of these two prominent media and communication companies will create an organization that’s well positioned for diverse market engagement and future success,” a joint statement said. “With the addition of Saltscapes, Metro Guide and Advocate will boast industry-leading expertise in lifestyle, tourism, homes, arts and culture, entertainment, transportation, health, contract publishing, e-publishing, community journalism and events.” The initial focus will be on sharing combined strengths to facilitate growth.
The Saltscapes brand has long celebrated the culture, values and rewards of living on Canada’s East Coast. The premiere issue of Saltscapes Magazine was launched in Spring of 2000. Jim and Linda Gourlay are the founders, owners and co-publishers of Saltscapes Magazine, Atlantic Canada’s largest paid circulation lifestyle publication, and, in partnership with Glenn Squires and Pacrim Hospitality Services Inc., are organizers of the annual Saltscapes East Coast Expo, which is now entering its 14th year.
Jim was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and relocated to Canada in his 20s to take advantage of the fly fishing opportunities here. In 1985, he and former business partner, Neville Gilfoy, launched a conservation-based hunting and fishing magazine for Atlantic Canada called Eastern Woods & Waters. Linda, a native Nova Scotian, worked in tourism, commercial real estate and event marketing before joining Jim in the publishing business. In 1998, they began to research and develop a regional lifestyle magazine that would celebrate the people, traditions and natural environment of Atlantic Canada.
