Standard Finishing Systems (Andover, MA), a leading supplier of post-press and paper-handling solutions, has announced the latest addition to its line of perfect-binding solutions – the Standard Horizon BQ-500 Perfect Binder. The system is designed for increased book-of-one productivity, increased automation and increased quality control over a wider range of substrates, compared to other competitive models.
Characterizing the new model as “the most productive binder for book-of-one in its class,” the technology features an improved and easy-to-use 12.1” touchscreen for quick set-up, an ergonomic design for efficient, operator-friendly production, an enhanced delivery system for thin books, and much more. In a variable range of +/- 5mm, the BQ-500 can reach production speeds of up to 800 books per hour that’s “almost double the productivity of other binders in this range,” said the OEM. The new perfect binder features interchangeable EVA and PUR glue tanks with a new and improved tank removal process for cleaner and easier tank changeovers. The BQ-500 is the first perfect binder to come equipped with iCE LINK, a new cloud-based monitoring tool from Horizon that can also handle KPI analysis, PM schedules and alerts, JDF/JMF workflow, scheduling, job creation, editing and much more.
The BQ-500 can run inline with Standard’s HT-300 Three-Side Trimmer, also released this year, for seamless book production. The HT-300, said Standard, offers higher productivity and more versatility compared to comparable trimmers due to a rotary table in the trim section that enables not only three-side trimming, but also finishing in a variety of shapes – including corner cuts. The HT-300 also offers flap cover trimming to accommodate a wider variety of applications, and setup can be automated via the colour touchscreen or with a barcode reader at the in-feed. It’s also over 35% faster than the previous Standard model and can process up to 300 books/stacks per hour at 4 books per stack, for a total of up to 1,200 books per hour.
“The continued increase in demand for personalization and customization is resulting in even shorter book run lengths, along with increased book-of-one production,” said David Reny, Executive Vice President at Standard Finishing Systems. “The BQ-500 is perfectly designed to fit the needs of today’s print environments, and it’s another powerful step forward in automated perfect binding.”
