The printing industry lost a tireless worker last month. The last time I saw Leo Thibault, founder of Unigraph International, was at the Print World Show in 2010 when he became ill suddenly. Sadly, Leo passed away in his Montreal home June 23 after a long and courageous battle with brain cancer. Leo was a pioneer in our industry and will be missed. Our condolences to his wife Ann Louise, to sons John and Mike, who have been running the business so admirably these past several years, and to all those in the Thibault family. There’s a fitting tribute written by our senior writer Tony Curcio leading off our People and Events page.

The latest confirmed speaker at our Printing Survivor II event Sept. 20 in Toronto is Joseph Truncale, President and CEO of the National Association for Printing Leadership (NAPL). He’ll be discussing the state of the printing industry in North America through 2015 and how you can create your own recovery and participate in the upturn ahead. A renowned industry expert and inspirational speaker, he will be joining keynote speakers John Foley Jr., Peter Muir and Jay Mandarino. For early-bird tickets ($95 HST) contact Brendan Harte at (647) 349-0397 or me personally at 1-877-513-3999.

I would also like to thank our sponsors, who have made this second annual event possible. They include Konica Minolta (Gold), Fujifilm (Silver), Agfa (Silver), Heidelberg (Bronze), Harrison Mailing Ltd. (Bronze) and 4over (Bronze). Only one Bronze Sponsorship remains.

I’m also happy to report that we continue to be very proactive in social media, especially on twitter where we now have over 4,300 followers. We’re also continuing to put up almost twice as much news on our website as we did previously. To complement our News & Comments and Installations pages, we’ve also added Tech & Design News, People & Events, New Products and Acquisitions & Partnerships as regular monthly features. If you have any news about your company, we definitely want to hear about it.

And don’t forget about Graph Expo, Oct. 7 – 10 in Chicago; the SGIA Specialty Printing & Imaging Technology Show in Las Vegas, Oct. 18 – 20; the Print World show on short-run technology Nov. 17 – 19 in Toronto; and of course Printing Survivor II in Toronto Sept. 20. Be sure to mark all of them on your calendar.

Congratulations to Spain who defeated Italy 4-0 to win the Euro Cup. Hours before the game, our parish priest had asked us to pray for Italy, saying that they would need it!

As always, stay positive and stay focused.
